Yangwang import

You have probably seen the videos. A huge SUV drives into a lake, starts floating and keeps going. A supercar hops over a ditch. Both are real, and both are Yangwang. The luxury brand of BYD, the world's largest electric carmaker, has shown its cars at Geneva and Goodwood and openly targets Range Rover, Porsche and Bentley. BYD has announced more than once that Yangwang is coming to Europe, but European pricing, dealers and firm launch dates are still unclear, and the UK has been mentioned for 2027. If you do not want to wait, Yangwang import is the way to get one now. The U8 already sells officially in the United Arab Emirates, which is the shortest route into Europe. SCL Rotterdam brings your Yangwang through the port of Rotterdam and handles everything from sourcing to registration. Before you commit, we tell you honestly what it costs and what to watch out for.

Why import a Yangwang into Europe?

Yangwang shows what happens when engineering has no budget limit. The U8 and U9 each have four electric motors, one per wheel. That lets the car spin on the spot, keep driving after a blowout and, in the case of the U8, stay afloat for a while in deep water. The U9's suspension can make the car jump on command.

Then there is the rarity. Even in China these cars are an unusual sight, and in Europe you can count them on very few hands. A Yangwang turns heads anywhere, from a Monaco harbour front to a car park in Rotterdam.

Popular Yangwang models to import

Yangwang U8

The car that started it all and the logical first choice. A 5.3 metre SUV with more than 1,100 horsepower, four motors and a petrol range extender. On the Chinese test cycle it covers around 180 kilometres on electricity and about 1,000 kilometres in total. It can wade through a metre of water and float for half an hour. In the Emirates it is sold as the U8 Arabian Edition.

Yangwang U9

A fully electric supercar with a carbon fibre body, around 1,300 horsepower and a 0 to 100 km/h sprint in just over two seconds. It charges at up to 500 kW. There is also a Track Edition with considerably more power.

Yangwang U7

A luxury saloon of over five metres with exceptionally low drag and active suspension that reads the road ahead. Available as a fully electric car and as a plug in hybrid. An alternative to the S Class or Panamera, with technology neither of them offers.

What to know before you import a Yangwang

Where the car comes from

China only allows vehicles to be exported under licence, through the manufacturer or authorised exporters. In the Emirates, BYD sells the U8 through an official dealer, which makes Dubai the logical route. For the U9 and U7 we look at what is possible case by case.

Duties per model

The U8 uses a range extender, so the extra EU countervailing duty on Chinese EVs does not apply. It pays the standard 10 percent import duty plus import VAT. The U9 and the electric U7 do face the countervailing duty, which is 17 percent for cars from the BYD group.

Registration and taxes differ per country

Once cleared through customs in Rotterdam, the car can move freely within the EU. Registration and road tax are national matters, though. A U8 weighs over three tonnes and has a petrol engine on board, which some countries tax heavily, such as the Netherlands with its BPM. SCL arranges Dutch and German registration in house and can advise on other European countries.

Charging, software and service

Chinese market cars have a GB/T charging port, while Europe uses CCS2. With the U8 this matters less, because you can always continue on petrol. Until Yangwang launches officially, there is no dedicated service network in Europe, although parent brand BYD has a growing dealer network.

What does it cost to import a Yangwang?

The final price is made up of the purchase price, shipping, import duty, import VAT, conversion work, inspection and registration. The U9 and the electric U7 add the EU countervailing duty. In the Emirates, a U8 costs around 650,000 dirham. Some European countries add a registration tax on top. Want to know where you will end up? Calculate your costs or ask us for a tailored quote.

Frequently asked questions about importing a Yangwang car

Is Yangwang sold in Europe?

Not yet. BYD has announced that Yangwang is coming to Europe, but dealers, prices and firm launch dates are still unclear. Until then, importing is the way to get one.

Can the Yangwang U8 really float?

Yes. According to BYD, the U8 can wade through a metre of water and stay afloat for up to half an hour in an emergency. Its four individual motors also let it turn on the spot.

Do I pay extra import duty on a Yangwang?

It depends on the model. The range extended U8 pays the standard import duty plus VAT. The U9 and the electric U7 also face a 17 percent EU countervailing duty.

Where does an imported Yangwang come from?

Usually the United Arab Emirates, where BYD sells the U8 officially. Importing directly from China is harder, because China only allows vehicles to be exported under licence.

Can an imported Yangwang be registered in Europe?

Yes, as long as it meets European requirements. Each country has its own inspection and registration process. We handle Dutch and German registration in house and advise on the steps for other countries.
