BAIC import

In the 1980s, a Chinese carmaker signed a deal with Jeep. The result was Beijing Jeep, and that name still lives on in the letters BJ on BAIC's off roaders today. Look at a BJ40 and you will see the Wrangler in it straight away: boxy, tough and built to leave the tarmac behind. BAIC is one of China's largest carmakers. At home it sells its off roaders under the Beijing name, while in Europe and the Middle East they wear the BAIC badge. In most European countries there are no BAIC dealers at all. If you want a BJ40 or BJ60 anyway, BAIC import is the way to get one. SCL Rotterdam brings your BAIC to your door, from within Europe or from the Emirates, and handles everything up to registration. Before you commit, we tell you honestly what it costs and which route makes most sense.

Why import a BAIC?

BAIC builds off roaders the old fashioned way. A body on frame construction, selectable four wheel drive, locking differentials and a crawl function for steep climbs. Add modern technology such as large screens, surround cameras and driver assistance, and you get a proper 4x4 that is also comfortable every day.

The biggest argument is price. A BJ40 costs about as much in the Emirates as a well equipped family car. Even after shipping and taxes, it remains considerably cheaper than a Wrangler or Land Cruiser with similar off road ability.

Popular BAIC models to import

BAIC BJ40

The best known BAIC, with the most Jeep in its genes. Available with two or four doors. In the Emirates it comes with a 2.0 turbo petrol engine and four wheel drive, from 119,000 dirham. In China there is also a range extender version.

BAIC BJ60

Bigger, more luxurious and available with seven seats. Body on frame, selectable four wheel drive, three locking differentials and twelve stages of crawl control. In the Emirates it starts at 169,000 dirham.

BAIC BJ30

A hybrid SUV with off road styling, built for daily use. Less suited to heavy terrain, but more efficient and comfortable on the motorway.

BAIC BJ80

The brand's largest and most eye catching off roader, with a boxy shape often compared to the G Class.

Two routes: inside or outside Europe

From within the EU

BAIC is gradually entering Europe. In Spain, Santana has been building off roaders based on the BJ40 and BJ30 since 2026, under its own Santana brand. In countries such as the Czech Republic, BAIC sells its SUVs officially. These cars carry European type approval and can be moved to another EU country without customs or conversion.

From Dubai

Want a genuine BJ40, BJ60 or BJ80 with the BAIC badge? Then it usually comes from the Emirates, where BAIC sells its off roaders officially. It is shipped to Rotterdam, cleared through customs and prepared in our workshop before registration.

What to know before you import a BAIC

Duties and VAT

BAIC's off roaders run on petrol or use a range extender, so the extra EU countervailing duty on Chinese EVs does not apply. A car from outside the EU pays the standard 10 percent import duty plus import VAT.

Registration and taxes differ per country

Registration and road tax are national matters. A petrol off roader can be expensive to register in countries that tax CO2 heavily, such as the Netherlands with its BPM, while other countries are far more lenient. SCL arranges Dutch and German registration in house and can advise on other European countries.

Service and parts

There is no BAIC dealer network in most of Europe. Much of the technology is simple and robust, though, which makes servicing at a good 4x4 specialist easier.

How your BAIC import works

  1. Advice first. We discuss the model, the best route, your destination country and a realistic cost estimate.
  2. Purchase and inspection. We help you find a reliable car and have it inspected before you pay. Our payment service keeps the transaction safe.
  3. Transport. By road from within Europe, or by container or RoRo ship to Rotterdam from further afield. We strongly recommend transport insurance.
  4. Customs clearance. For cars from outside the EU, we file the declaration and settle all duties and taxes correctly.
  5. Conversion and inspection. Where needed, our workshop prepares the car for European rules, ready for the inspection in your country.
  6. Registration and delivery. We arrange registration where possible and deliver your BAIC by road to your door, wherever you are in Europe.

You can follow every step in real time through our customer portal.

Frequently asked questions about importing a BAIC car

Is BAIC sold in Europe?

Partly. BAIC sells its SUVs officially in countries such as the Czech Republic, and in Spain Santana builds off roaders based on BAIC models. In most European countries, though, there are no BAIC dealers.

What is the difference between BAIC and Beijing?

They are the same company. In China, BAIC sells its off roaders under the Beijing name, while in Europe and the Middle East they carry the BAIC badge. The letters BJ come from Beijing Jeep, the joint venture with Jeep from the 1980s.

Do I pay extra import duty on a BAIC?

No. The extra EU countervailing duty only applies to fully electric cars from China. BAIC's off roaders run on petrol or use a range extender. A car from outside the EU pays the standard import duty plus VAT.

Can an imported BAIC be registered in Europe?

Yes, as long as it meets European requirements. A car with European type approval is relatively easy to register. Cars from outside the EU need an individual inspection. We handle Dutch and German registration in house and advise on other countries.

How long does a BAIC import take?

From within the EU, often just a few weeks. From outside Europe, expect a few months for shipping, customs, conversion and inspection. You will get a realistic schedule with your quote.
