German KFZ Registrations

What is a KFZ registration?

A KFZ Brief, also known as a Kraftfahrzeugbrief, is a German vehicle registration certificate. This document contains important information about your vehicle, such as technical specifications and ownership details. Obtaining a KFZ Brief is an essential part of vehicle registration in Germany but also offers advantages for vehicles that eventually need to be registered in the Netherlands.

Advantages of a KFZ registration compared to a RDW inspection

A KFZ registration offers several advantages compared to a direct RDW inspection:

  • Cost Savings: When you have a non-European vehicle inspected directly by the RDW, you are required to present the car at the RDW test center in Lelystad, and you must transport the car there yourself. A KFZ brief inspection can be carried out in our own workshop, so you always save on transport costs.
  • Time Efficiency: The German inspection agencies we work with can often act faster than the RDW test center in Lelystad, allowing your vehicle to get on the road more quickly.
  • Flexibility: By using a KFZ Brief, your vehicle can be more easily registered throughout Europe, which is particularly useful for export and import within the EU. A KFZ Brief is recognized in almost every European country.

How does the process work?

Many people wonder if their car needs to go to Germany for a KFZ inspection. The answer is no. SCL Rotterdam has built strong relationships with German inspection agencies over the years, allowing them to inspect vehicles at our location in Schiedam. This means your car does not need to cross the border, and the entire process can take place under one roof here in the Netherlands!

How long does it take?

The entire process of obtaining a KFZ Brief can vary, but typically it takes about 4 to 6 weeks. This depends on various factors such as the availability of the inspection agencies and the condition of your vehicle. We ensure that the process runs as quickly and smoothly as possible. During the process, we store your vehicle for free in our secure warehouse. The car may not be on public roads during this period because you cannot insure the car without a license plate.
