Transport insurance

We work with the most reliable parties in the world. However, the sea can sometimes be ruthless, and disasters frequently make the news. You probably remember the container ship that lost 400 containers in the Wadden Sea during a storm in 2019, or when a container ship crashed into a kilometer-long bridge in Baltimore, USA, in early 2024, causing significant container damage. It is important to know that the loss of or damage to your car in such cases is often not covered.

Therefore, we always recommend taking out additional transport insurance for your import car. If you choose to transport your car via SCL Rotterdam by sea freight, we can assist you with this as well. Through our insurance agent, you can take out two types of car transport insurance for your vehicle.

All-Risk Insurance

All damages incurred during transport due to fire, theft, or any other reason are covered. This includes clear scratches, dents, and other damages.

Total-Loss Insurance

Only total loss damages incurred during transport are covered. This is, for example, the case if the container holding your vehicle falls overboard or is otherwise so severely damaged that the car is declared a total loss by a damage expert. Any transport-related damages such as scratches and dents to the goods are not covered.

General Average:

If extra costs need to be incurred to save the ship's cargo in an emergency, these are distributed among all shippers based on the value of the cargo. This principle is also known in shipping as ‘General Average’. As a customer of SCL Rotterdam, you are automatically a shipper. This also means that you are liable for your share of the costs incurred in a ‘General Average’ situation. If you have transport insurance, the insurer will cover these costs as well. 

The cost of transport insurance depends on the type of transport and the value of the vehicle.
