Ro-Ro car transport
With Roll-on/Roll-off (RORO or ro-ro) shipping, your car or camper is transported on a ship specifically built to carry vehicles. You could compare a roll-on roll-off ship to a large floating parking garage. Vehicles are driven onto the ship by staff at the loading port and securely fastened to the deck.
Upon arrival at the destination port, the vehicles are unfastened and driven off the ship. Simple! This method of shipping is often used by manufacturersand importers to transport large batches of new cars, but also for other wheeled cargo such as truck trailers, trailers, or heavy industrial or agricultural machinery such as excavators or tractors. But, Ro-Ro can also be used to transport a single car for both individuals and businesses.
At SCL Rotterdam, we regularly use this modality for shipping vehicles that are too large to be loaded into a regular container. These are typically vehicles that are higher than 2.50 meters and/or wider than 2.25 meters. When we ship your vehicle via roro transport, there are a few important things to keep in mind:
- Ro-Ro is not available for all ports.
- It is generally not possible to ship items inside your car.
- You must clean the car thoroughly before it can be shipped, in accordance with the guidelines of the destination country.
- The car must be in good running condition and able to drive, brake, and steer independently. Ensure there is enough fuel (but not too much, usually 1/8 tank is sufficient). If the battery is weak, consider replacing it before shipping!
