Exemption for removal vehicles

When you move your car to the Netherlands, you may be entitled to a number of exemptions. For example, you do not have to pay BPM, VAT and import duties. And that saves a lot of money! At SCL Rotterdam, we take all the paperwork off your hands and personally ensure that you can import your car as part of the moving goods.

Great, I want you to arrange my exemption!

Customs terms and conditions for moving goods

But beware: you can only use this arrangement if you meet the conditions set by customs. According to customs, your car is part of the household effects if you:

  • are moving from a country outside the European Union to the Netherlands;
  • have lived outside the European Union for at least 12 consecutive months;
  • have owned the car for at least 6 months;
  • used the car yourself in your old home country and will continue to use it yourself in your new home country;
  • import the car within 12 months after moving to the Netherlands;
  • will not lend, pledge, rent out or transfer the car within 12 months of the import date.

Clearing a car as part of your moving goods

Are you having your car moved to the Netherlands by SCL Rotterdam? Then we will arrange the customs clearance as part of the moving goods as standard. We will also file a declaration with the Tax Authorities to obtain the exemption permit for the bpm and VAT. All you have to do is provide us with a number of documents. Then we will do the rest.

We need these documents from you:

  • A power of attorney for direct representation at customs
  • The exemption permit for your car as part of the moving goods
  • A copy of the purchase invoice of the car (Bill of Sale)
  • A copy of the original registration certificate (Certificate of Title)

Why should I move my car instead of buying a new car in the Netherlands?

In nine out of ten cases, moving a car to the Netherlands is financially more attractive than buying a new one there. Simply because cars in the Netherlands are considerably more expensive than in other countries. A car in America can sometimes be half the price of a Dutch dealer. And when you choose to have the car moved by SCL, we will take all the paperwork off your hands.

Help! The fiscal value of my car is very high on the NL license plate! What can I do?

Imported cars can sometimes have a higher tax value than a comparable original Dutch car. This has to do with Dutch laws and regulations and can have major consequences for your insurance premium. Because the higher the tax value, the higher the premium you have to pay. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do about this. Want to know more? Contact our experts.

My insurer requires an SCM-certified alarm system. What does this entail?

Insurers sometimes require SCM-certified alarm systems for cars with a high fiscal value. SCM stands for Stichting Certificering Motorrijtuigbeveiliging (Motor Vehicle Security Certification Foundation) and shows that you meet the requirements that Dutch insurers have set for an alarm system. In our workshop, we can install an alarm system that is provided with an SCM certificate immediately after clearing your car at customs.
