Moving your car to the Netherlands? Here's how we handle it!
When we say we take care of everything, we truly mean it. We pick up your car from your doorstep and deliver it road-ready in the Netherlands. Below, we explain the entire process. Moving a car from abroad has never been this easy!
- Pickup: We collect your car from your home and transport it by road to the most logistically convenient port.
- Shipping: Your car is placed in a container and loaded onto the ship bound for Rotterdam.
- Unloading: Once it arrives at the port of Rotterdam, we pick up your car and unload it at our facility in Schiedam.
- Customs Clearance: We handle customs clearance as part of your household move and arrange the exemption from BPM (vehicle tax).
- Inspection: We ensure that your car meets all Dutch regulations and make any necessary minor adjustments.
- Registration: We register your car with the RDW and apply for Dutch license plates immediately.
- Tax Declaration: We also handle the BPM declaration with the Dutch Tax Authority. This is mandatory, even if you qualify for an exemption.
- Cleaning: Your car is thoroughly cleaned inside and out, and the license plates are mounted.
After this process, your car is completely ready for the Dutch roads. The only thing you need to arrange yourself is car insurance, which you can easily do online as soon as you receive your new license plate number. We will keep you updated throughout the process.
Transport Packages
When moving your car to the Netherlands, you can choose from different transport packages. These determine how your car is loaded and how quickly it can be shipped. We offer four main options:
Economy Class
Economy Class is the most budget-friendly transport option. Your car is shipped based on consolidation, meaning it is placed in a container with other vehicles. We wait until the container is full before it is shipped.
Business Class
With Business Class, your car is shipped in a container with a maximum of two other vehicles. We guarantee that your car is securely positioned on the floor, making this an ideal choice for delicate vehicles or those with a lowered chassis.
Special Class
Special Class is our premium transport option. Your car is placed in its own exclusive container, allowing it to be shipped on the first available transport. If sea freight isn't fast enough, air freight is also an option.
Roll-on, Roll-off
With roll-on, roll-off (RoRo), the vehicle is driven directly onto the ship. This method is ideal for vehicles taller than 2.40 meters that do not fit in a container, such as campers, trucks, and motorhomes. Please note that RoRo shipping is not available from all ports.
Not sure which option is best for moving your car to the Netherlands? No problem. Based on our experience, we are happy to advise you and help you make the right choice.
Transport Insurance and General Average
We work with the most reliable partners worldwide, but the sea can be unpredictable, and maritime disasters occasionally make the news. You might recall the container ship that lost 400 containers in the Wadden Sea during a storm in 2019. It's important to know that in such cases, the loss or damage of your car is not automatically covered.
For this reason, we strongly recommend taking out additional transport insurance. If you choose to move your car with SCL Rotterdam, we can assist you with this as well. Through our insurance agent, you can choose from two types of transport insurance for your vehicle.
- All-Risk Insurance: An All-Risk insurance policy covers all damage that may occur to your car during transport, from scratches and dents to total loss. This includes all possible scenarios, including fire and theft.
- Total Loss Insurance: A Total Loss insurance policy only covers damage if a claims adjuster declares the vehicle a total loss, such as in the event of a container falling overboard. Minor transport-related damages, such as scratches and dents, are not covered under this policy.
General Average
If additional costs are incurred in an emergency to save the ship’s cargo, these costs are shared among all shippers based on the value of their cargo. In the maritime industry, this principle is known as General Average.
As an SCL Rotterdam customer, you are automatically considered a shipper. This means that in the event of General Average, you are liable for your share of the costs incurred. However, if you have transport insurance, your insurer will cover these costs.
