EU license plate registration

Converting a Foreign License Plate to a Dutch License Plate at SCL Rotterdam

Before your car can be registered with Dutch license plates, it must go through a registration procedure and a technical inspection (APK). This means your imported vehicle needs both a physical and administrative inspection.

At SCL Rotterdam, the physical APK inspection is carried out by our in-house mechanics, who are certified RDW inspectors. This ensures that your vehicle is technically sound and ready for registration.

All administrative processes, such as RDW registration and BPM declaration, are handled by our specialized automotive team in the office. Everything is managed efficiently under one roof.

In some cases, an imported vehicle does not comply with European and/or Dutch regulations. For example, American cars are not always equipped with a rear fog light. That’s why we ensure any necessary modifications are made to meet European standards before the inspection. If needed, we also arrange an Individual European Type Approval. These modifications are included in our full-service package and are essential for vehicles from outside the EU, such as American or Japanese cars.

How does BPM declaration for an imported car work?

Once the car has passed inspection, we submit the BPM declaration. This is a tax declaration required by the Dutch Tax Authorities that determines how much tax you must pay to register your vehicle. The amount is based on CO₂ emissions, the age of the car, and its residual value. SCL Rotterdam handles the entire process for you, from data collection to submission. You'll automatically receive a payment notice from the Tax Authorities. This declaration is mandatory for every vehicle registered in the Netherlands.

Costs of converting to a Dutch license plate

Before a vehicle can receive Dutch plates, any applicable BPM must be paid. After submitting the BPM declaration, you’ll automatically receive a payment notice.
