Importing a car from China

For importing a car, you pay VAT and import duties. Have all necessary documents ready, including the original registration certificate, purchase invoice, and ID documents. SCL handles customs clearance and takes care of the BPM declaration, a Dutch license plate, and schedules an RDW inspection. In some cases, we can also assist in obtaining European type approval. As an extra service, SCL can modify the car to meet Dutch road transport standards.

Note: China currently has more than 40 relatively new car brands, many of which have never appeared on the European market. Importing a model that has not been previously imported into Europe can be a very complicated, expensive, uncertain, and lengthy process, which we strongly advise against for private individuals.

Unfortunately, SCL Rotterdam currently does not offer purchase support services on-site in China. We can only assist you with logistics and possibly import and registration in Europe, but we cannot help you with the purchase of a Chinese car in China at this time.

Exporting a Car to China

If you plan to export a car to China, feel free to contact us. Over the years, SCL Rotterdam has shipped many vehicles to China, often by container sea transport, but also by train transport or air freight. We are happy to advise you on the different options and associated costs.

VAT and Import Duties from China

Of course, we ensure safe transport. We offer multiple options, such as container transport or air freight. Based on your preferences, we will prepare a clear quote in advance and inform you of the additional costs such as import duties and VAT.

These taxes apply to car imports from China since it is a country outside the EU. Exceptions apply for classic cars and household moves, so we can also inform you more about these.

Note:The European Union intends to significantly increase tariffs on imported Chinese cars. Normally, the import rate for regular passenger cars is 10 percent, but from mid-2024, it will increase by 17 to 38 percent, depending on the brand and model. Do you have questions about this?
