Technical Adjustments and European Regulations
You’ve bought a beautiful classic car abroad — now it’s time to finalize the Dutch registration. This is the final step before you can enjoy carefree driving with your classic vehicle. At SCL Rotterdam, we support you from technical adjustments and inspections all the way through BPM filing and license plate registration — all under one roof, with expertise, experience, and passion for classics.
What does “Classic Car” mean under Dutch law?
Definitions differ depending on purpose (registration, taxation, import):
RDW (Vehicle Registration): Vehicles built before January 1, 1998, do not require EU type approval.
Tax Authorities (Road Tax): A vehicle qualifies as a classic and is exempt from road tax once it is 40 years old or older.
Customs (Non-EU Import): Cars over 30 years old in original condition are exempt from import duties. In the Netherlands, you’ll pay only 9% VAT on the purchase price (as stated on the invoice), plus transport and insurance costs.
Tip: Some EU countries offer lower VAT rates on imports — discuss the best import route with SCL.
When can you get a special (blue) plate?
Certain classics qualify for a special blue plate if they:
- Were first registered before January 1, 1978
- Use a plate format of NN‑NN‑LL (two numbers, two numbers, two letters)
Want a blue plate? Let us know — we’ll take care of it in your application.
Import & registration process — step by step
1. Purchase & Transport: Already bought your classic abroad? We handle safe, insured transport to the Netherlands — in a closed trailer upon request.
2. Technical Inspection: At our Schiedam workshop, we conduct a thorough check to ensure compliance with Dutch regulations — lighting, indicators, city lights, etc. We can also help with foreign registrations (e.g., German plates) if needed. Any modifications that may affect authenticity? We’ll consult you first and store original parts carefully for later reinstallation.
3. RDW Inspection: A physical inspection at an RDW location is mandatory for classics. With our nearby RDW contact and professional handler, we handle:
- Transport to/from the RDW site (open/closed trailers or road)
- On-site support during inspection
- VIN stamping and technical requirement checks
4. BPM Filing Even if BPM is not due, filing is mandatory. We submit it promptly and accurately so your license plates aren’t delayed
5. Plates & Delivery After RDW approval and BPM processing, your license plates arrive. We install them, offer add-ons (alarm system, detailing), and deliver the car — either to our site or to your door.
Optional services for your classic
Alarm System Installation: Meet insurer requirements with a certified alarm or immobilizer, installed in our workshop.
Cleaning & Detailing: From vacuuming to full interior and exterior treatment — your car will shine on delivery.
European Delivery: Prefer home delivery? We arrange safe road transport across Europe.
